   The title of this post may look like garbage to you.  But the truly geeky will notice the equals sign at the end, and realize "hey, this might be base64-encoded!"  And so it is.  In plaintext, it says "Say WHAT?!" -- but I have been saving that title for another post, on recruiter emails that aren't quite so illegible, and recruiter phone messages (and even conversations) that are almost as indecipherable.

   The lines being all the same length except for the last, and it ending in an equals sign, was a sign to me.  So I decoded it.  Long story short, exactly as I suspected, it was a spammy recruiter with an utterly unsuitable "opportunity".    To quote from it after stripping out all the HTML and CSS junk, including the approximately 1/3 of it that was commented out:

Why Recruiting Rubyists Is Hard

   Recently I had cause to not-quite-rant on LinkedIn. A recruiter (who, AFAIK, hadn't done anything wrong) asked in the Ruby on Rails group:
So...any idea's on why it is hard to find a Ruby on Rails Developer in Chicago for a contract to hire?
   I didn't expect much of a reaction to my reply, but so many people have been "Like"ing it, either on LinkedIn or by email to me, that I figured I should share it with the world.  Even though it wasn't a rant, this seemed like the most appropriate forum.  It was:
There are plenty of RoR devs in Chicagoland.  There has to be more to the story. Is your client:

- insisting on the "to hire" part, and getting RoR devs applying who are sick of the nonsense usually attached to a so-called "permanent" position, and have zero interest in that part?

- insisting on other unpalatable terms, like a "we own your brain 24/7" IP policy?

- offering a small fraction of the market rate for RoR devs? (Possibly thinking that stock options, or even equity, in their little startup, is worth anything!)

- insisting on 100% onsite work, in a location that's a long commute for most people, when the work could easily be done remotely?

- insisting on 9-5 hours, M-F, no flexibility?

- insisting on long hours, including weekends, and not paying extra for overtime, or maybe even not paying for it at all?

- using outdated other tools and/or techniques?

- offering boring work in a dead-end position utterly unrelated to the core business of the company?

- widely unpalatable for other reasons, like how some people would never work for one of the major political parties or the other?

You see, RoR (and Ruby in general) is in a candidate's market right now -- it's mainstream enough to have high demand, but not quite enough yet to have high *supply*.  So, we Rubyists are in a reasonable position to insist upon companies (and recruiters) treating us decently, like real human beings with a life, not fungible robots.
   The funny part is that among the people liking the comment was... the recruiter herself.  That gives me refreshing hope for the recruiting industry.  There's at least one recruiter out there, who knows (if not before, then at least now!) how horribly the recruiting industry usually treats candidates, and how at least some candidates feel about it.

   One of the recruiters who spammed me earlier, Bhavana Gour of eTouch Systems, pushed my buttons again recently, though indirectly.  She didn't do anything all that unusual.  Unfortunately, that doesn't mean it was good, it just means that a lot of her colleagues commit the same offense.  She posted several job ads in the Discussions tab, rather than the Jobs tab, of a group on LinkedIn.  Being sick and tired of this nonsense, I explained that fact with this analogy, which I would now like to share with you:

   Suppose you are in a corner of a breakout room at a recruiting conference.  Out in the hallway is a clearly marked corkboard where recruiting jobs are supposed to be posted -- there's a big banner over it, only a blind person or total obliviot could possibly miss it.  You're in a breakout session, discussing advanced recruiting techniques and resources with a bunch of your colleagues, mostly happily employed.  Some jerk barges into your discussion and starts talking about the recruiting openings he's got.  You wouldn't like that, would you?  You'd probably tell him to shut up, go away, and just post his notices on the corkboard.  Right?

   Now you might have some small inkling how many of us feel about pushy arrogant clueless recruiters crapping all over the Discussion tabs on LinkedIn groups, and other such forums.  If I were in such a situation, and unemployed, I'd be sure to get that jerk's name... so I'd know *never* to do business with him, from *either* side of the table.

       Um, yeah.  Right.  Sure, I'll waste my time on something that's probably going to be utterly unsuitable.  My resume, web site, and assorted profiles, make abundantly clear what I'm looking for... and yet by my wild guesstimation, 80% of the recruiters who call, and 90% of those who write, are essentially spamming.

       Sometimes they're touting permanent positions.  I haven't been interested in those for a year and a half, since deciding to go freelance.  (Okay, some are using old data... but this guy called a more recent phone number, and wrote to a more recent email address.)  Sometimes it's the wrong job entirely.  They've contacted me for anything from system administration (which is at least some kind of IT so I chalk those up more to appalling ignorance than spamminess), to insurance sales and train conducting.  (I kid you not!  Yeah, I'll be putting up a Hall of Shame eventually.)  Sometimes it's the wrong location -- I'm not open to relocation, so it must be either within a reasonable commute, or (preferably) remote.

       But this putz takes it to a new low.  No information whatsoever about the job.  For all I know, Bridge Technologies and Solutions could be looking for a bridge construction worker.

       But wait!  There's more!  Shortly thereafter, I received an email (my address changed to protect the relatively innocent, at least in this matter):

       Yup, sure enough, at the very least the wrong location -- unless he's also being stupid enough to omit that they're willing to take remote workers.

       Then there's the possible conflict between "6 Months Contract" in the Subject line, versus "full time position" in the text.  Yes, "full time" really means, to anyone thinking logically about it, approximately 40 hours a week, as opposed to much less.  But recruiters, in their infinite "wisdom", often use that term, and likewise the word "position" (as opposed to "contract" or "project"), to mean "permanent".  (That's long been a particular pet peeve of mine.)  Maybe he's actually more logical about it than most, rather than just being as inconsistent as I've come to expect.  But what are the odds?

       Then there's the XXX@YYY.ZZZ above.  The YYY.ZZZ part is one of my several domains.  The XXX part is the last part of something that all legitimate addresses there (except for a few standards like postmaster, webmaster, etc.) end in.  It's part of my spam protection -- if you send email to an address at YYY.ZZZ, that doesn't end in .WWW.XXX (yes, WWW is another constant string), and isn't one of those few standard addresses, I can be assured it's spam, and just dump it in the spam folder.  Yes, indeed, the spam folder is exactly where I found this gem.

       So... a phone call with no useful information, followed by an email to an invalid address, about a gig in the wrong location (unless he's making another stupid mistake).  Brilliant.

       Congratulations, Sekar, you're the idiot of the day.

    Cure for Recruiter Spammorhea?

       Since last time, I've spent most of the time busy on a project.  That ended a few weeks ago, and I've spun the search machine back up again, so it's time for more Recruiting Rants while I can!

       Let's start off with one jerk who not only spammed me with an inappropriate "opportunity" (I get several per day), but he alone sent me multiple per day!  Over the course of a day or two, no problem... but we're talking about a month!  After a few days, I wrote back to tell him to see my web site and read about about what I wanted.  But I just got more spam.

       I called after a couple more days of it, and nobody answered (surprise!), but I left voicemail, giving my name and his, and asked anybody there to tell him to stop.  Result?  More spam.

       Over the next few weeks, during which I automatically routed all email from him straight to my spam folder, I wrote to the company via the contact form on their web site, called them again, and towards the ened, even started replying again, telling him to FOADIAF.  As you might have guessed... more spam.

       Shortly thereafter, I had had quite enough.  I found every email address I could at the company -- other recruiters, info, sales, whatever.  I quoted the latest spam back, told them the story, and said I would keep doing this until he stopped.  That finally got someone's attention, and I only had to do it one more time before I got an email of profuse apology.

       So, herewith, the first batch of entries in what you could consider a Hall of Shame.  Unfortunately I no longer have quite all of them, because my spam older than a month gets deleted automatically.  But still, perhaps this many repetitions of his email addresses will get him a taste of his own spam-based medicine:
